OVERCOMING ADVERSITY OR RESILIENCE

Course Overview

This online module is designed to facilitate the training of the equivalent of six (6) contact hours of continuing education, accredited through co-sponsorship by the Institute of Continuing Education of the College of Social Work Professionals of Puerto Rico.

This module consists of five (5) sections: (1) definitions, (2) schools of thought about resilience, (3) human development and strategies for overcoming and even being strengthened by experiences of adversity, (4) individual, family, community resilience, family intervention methodology, community methodology, and community resilience (5) Conclusion for reflection. For learning purposes at the end of the module participant will complete an exercise of material given.  

Training goal:

The audience will know and interact with a panoramic view about resilience.

Enabling objective:

  • During the training, the audience will learn about definitions, schools of thought, adaptability strategies and resilience intervention methodology.

Terminal objective:

  • At the end of the training, the audience will be able to reflect on the concept of resilience presented in this module.

 

 Conceptual creator of the module: Dr. Ursula Manfredo Plicet, master’s in social work and Doctor in Education, with a specialty in Leadership, the academic degrees were granted by the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus.  Author of the book: Narrative for didactics, implications for practice (2016).

The combination of professional competences (theoretical-practical) in social work and education position it as an expert in professional development and continuing education with varied formats.  Author of educational curricula, appraisal, and results in professional practice in social work. Over 40 years of professional experience, in substance abuse, mental health and families.

During his last 16 years of public service, he led with recognized efficiency and effectiveness the Office of Training and Quality Assurance of the Family and Family Administration of the Department of the Family in Puerto Rico.  In that capacity, he was responsible for training over 2,400 social workers annually, creating and maintaining the system of continuous improvement of the quality of child protection services, according to the highest standards of regulatory agencies.   In addition, she has worked as a university professor in various institutions of higher education, such as the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus, Inter-American University, Metropolitan Campus among others.
